Spaghetti at least had a unique flavour. Unforgiven then stands out like a beacon in the desert - one of the greatest Westerns of all time. My Favorite Westernshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04145269822438947207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816822228711777202.post-31792793591667906322018-05-04T18:55:15.065-07:002018-05-04T18:55:15.065-07:00I've read that Eastwood's character was on...I've read that Eastwood's character was once Stockburn's best deputy, until killed by him. Russell is fantastic in this. The scene above, with Stockburn and his deputies, was the best one in the movie.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05991122095860818996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816822228711777202.post-72522417235722712132013-08-01T18:40:43.024-07:002013-08-01T18:40:43.024-07:00Completely agree about Clint integrating spaghetti...Completely agree about Clint integrating spaghetti western stylistic elements into these films. It's been said that Josey Wales is an allegory of post-Vietnam reconciliation, but I think that's just academics and critics reaching a bit. The film is based on a book that is based on (as you state) reconciliation, but I think it's just Civil War reconciliation.
Patrick McGee makes the point that High Plains drifter fails to capture Leone's historical contextualization. Josey Wales was much stronger in that regard.
Let's not forget that the Preacher sleeps with Megan's mother, an "engaged" woman. Clearly Hull's woman. I interpret this as the storyteller's attempt to show that preachers are human and therefore flawed. But it's also damaging to the "ghost" story line, unless one chooses to believe we can have sex with ghosts.
I enjoyed the anti-corporate power/pro-people theme in Pale Rider. I always Stockburn and his crew as somewhat analogous to the modern police state, the inevitable, unfortunate result of too much interdigitation between government and commerce.
