What would make sense is if Todd kills the first brother and the other three brothers hunt him down because of that, but there just doesn't seem to be time for them to notify the authorities, get Todd's name on any kind of 'wanted' list and go for a reward. Either way it's rather confused but as you say, one of the things you just have to accept. It's a beautiful film in terms of scenery and music and Widmark made what might have been mediocre seem great (despite the ending!)
